A FINE AND LARGE LACQUER ‘OVERLAPPING FANS’ TEBAKO (ACCESSORY BOX) WITH INTERIOR TRAY

Japan, 19th century

Of rectangular shape, exquisitely decorated in gold, silver, and red takamaki-e and hiramaki-e on a mokume (wood grain) ground. The inrobuta (flush-fitting) lid and sides of the box depict seven fans embellished with fine kinpun and kirigane flakes, one featuring thatched huts by a lake, another with an oi next to a pine and chrysanthemums (kiku), one with a luxurious veranda, and others depicting lush gardens and peony flowers. The tray with four bracket feet presents two additional fans, showing a willow and a bird perched on a fishing boat, and another veranda, its underside finished in nashiji. The interior is finished in nashiji with gold fundame rims.

SIZE 15.5 x 25.5 x 20.5 cm

Provenance: The private collection of the Tomkinson family, United Kingdom. A copy of the invoice from Michael E. Bound, dated June 2011, stating a purchase price of GBP 2,800 (or approx. EUR 5,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing) and confirming the above, accompanies the lot. Michael Tomkinson (1841-1921) was a British businessman and noted collector from Kidderminster, Worcestershire, who began collecting Japanese art in 1878. With his wife, Annie Porrit Stonehouse, he assembled a collection of several thousand objects - including okimono, netsuke, lacquerware, inro, ceramics, woodblock prints, textiles, swords, and bronzes. His holdings were documented in the two-volume catalogue “A Japanese Collection” (1898), and he was also an active council member of the Japan Society. After his death, the collection was dispersed at auction in London, with works acquired by institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Ashmolean Museum, though many pieces remained with or were repurchased by the family. The Tomkinson family continued his collecting tradition in subsequent generations, acquiring further works, particularly fine lacquer, from auction houses and dealers in the United Kingdom and France.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear to the edges and typical losses to the kirigane flakes.

This present lot captures scenes from the the Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), Murasaki Shikibu’s celebrated 11th-century courtly romance. It captures the refined aesthetics of Heian court life, where aristocrats valued seasonal beauty and poetic sensitivity as measures of character and status.
