ERNEST HEMINGWAY (1899–1961), SIGNED COPY OF GREEN HILLS OF AFRICA, 1953 ERNEST HEMINGWAY (1899–1961), SIGNED COPY OF GREEN HILLS OF AFRICA, 1953

Provenance and Authenticity:

This copy of Green Hills of Africa bears a handwritten autograph of Ernest Hemingway on the title page beneath the printed author credit. The signature reads “Ernest Hemingway” in flowing cursive and appears to have been written directly on the page in dark ink. The autograph style corresponds with known examples of Hemingway’s signature, recognizable by the fluid script and distinctive horizontal flourish extending beneath the surname. Signed copies of Hemingway’s books were frequently obtained through personal presentation, literary events, or correspondence during the author’s lifetime.

Signature:

Signed “Ernest Hemingway” on the title page.

Description:

The volume is bound in green cloth boards with minimal external decoration typical of mid-twentieth-century Scribner’s bindings. The title page reads Green Hills of Africa by Ernest Hemingway and includes an illustration of an antelope skull with surrounding stars beneath the title. The page also credits decorations by Edward Shenton and lists Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York, 1953 as the publisher. Hemingway’s handwritten autograph appears prominently beneath the printed author name on the title page. The binding shows moderate surface wear and handling marks consistent with age, while the interior pages appear generally clean and well preserved. The signature remains bold and legible.

Historical significance:

Green Hills of Africa, first published in 1935, is Hemingway’s nonfiction account of his big-game hunting expedition in East Africa. Written in the style of a literary travel narrative, the work blends detailed observations of African landscapes and wildlife with reflections on writing, competition, and the nature of adventure. The book provides valuable insight into Hemingway’s personal experiences and literary philosophy during the mid-1930s and remains an important work within his broader body of nonfiction writing.

Valuation:

Signed copies of Hemingway’s books are highly sought after by collectors of twentieth-century literature. Copies signed directly on the title page are particularly desirable, especially when the signature is clear and the book remains well preserved. Value depends on the edition, condition, and the clarity and placement of the autograph.
