ERNEST HEMINGWAY (1899–1961), SIGNED COPY OF DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON, 1932 ERNEST HEMINGWAY (1899–1961), SIGNED COPY OF DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON, 1932

Provenance and Authenticity:

This copy of Death in the Afternoon bears a handwritten autograph of Ernest Hemingway on the title page beneath the printed author credit. The signature reads “Ernest Hemingway” in flowing cursive and appears to have been written directly on the page in dark ink. The form of the autograph corresponds with known examples of Hemingway’s signature, characterized by the fluid script and distinctive horizontal flourish extending beneath the surname. Signed copies of Hemingway’s works were commonly obtained through personal presentation, literary events, or private correspondence during the author’s lifetime.

Signature:

Signed “Ernest Hemingway” on the title page.

Description:

The volume is bound in dark cloth boards with the author’s facsimile signature stamped in gilt at the center of the front cover. The title page reads Death in the Afternoon by Ernest Hemingway and includes the well-known bull device printed beneath the title, reflecting the subject matter of the work. The book was published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York and London, in 1932. The opposite page contains an illustration titled The Bullfighter by Juan Gris printed on translucent paper. Hemingway’s autograph appears prominently below the printed author name on the title page. The binding shows visible wear and discoloration along the edges and lower portion of the boards consistent with age and handling, while the interior pages remain generally clean with light toning. The signature remains strong and clearly legible.

Historical significance:

Death in the Afternoon is Hemingway’s influential nonfiction study of Spanish bullfighting and its cultural significance. First published in 1932, the work blends detailed technical explanations of the bullfighting tradition with philosophical reflections on courage, artistry, and the nature of death. The book reflects Hemingway’s deep fascination with Spanish culture and stands as one of his most important works of literary nonfiction.

Valuation:

Signed copies of Hemingway’s books are highly sought after by collectors of twentieth-century literature. Early publications such as Death in the Afternoon are particularly desirable when signed on the title page and preserved in presentable condition. Value depends on the edition, condition of the binding and pages, and the clarity and placement of the signature.
