The text is taken from his famous tomb memorial stele and dated as the "4th year of Zhengguang" which corresponds to 523 AD. The epitaph was excavated in 1875 at a site close to present-day Longkou city in Shandong province and is held in Shandong Provincial Museum in Ji’nan, China. These two scrolls are complete in themselves. They form a precis of the text on this famous stone epitaph. Extraneous and superfluous text is omitted such as a section of the middle text on the epitaph and the complex detailed dating at the end. The scrolls provide a succinct precis of the titles and status achieved by Ju Yanyun. The study of epigraphy has long been a high-level intellectual pursuit in China enjoyed by scholars and officials. Lockhart, with his love of Chinese culture, also engaged in its study and assembled a large collection of rubbings of tomb and other inscriptions from sites predominantly in Shandong province. This fine and confidently-executed pair of scrolls were presumably presented to him as a gift by a local associate or scholar-official who knew of, and/or shared, Lockhart’s interests.
