China, 1736-1795. Naturalistically and finely carved in mirror image, standing on rockwork bases, their heads each turned to the sides, with short beaks below neatly incised crests, the plumage well detailed. The stone is of a translucent, markedly intense violet color, softly transitioning to light yellow bands. (2)Provenance: The private collection of Jules Speelman, London. Jules Speelman is a world-leading dealer and collector of East Asian art with 60 years of experience. In 1964 he joined his late father, Alfred, in the family business which already stretched back three generations to 19th century Holland and expanded into England around the turn of the century. Originally, A & J Speelman dealt with antiques, from European ceramics, silver, tapestries, and furniture to Chinese porcelain, and works of art. With his father, Jules gradually shifted the focus towards Asia and under Jules Speelman's skilled direction, A & J Speelman is now considered amongst the foremost dealers in Asian antiques, with a particular emphasis on figurative sculpture and works of art from the past 2000 years. Condition: Good condition with minor wear, small nicks and chips to exposed areas, and one bird with a small repair to one feather. The stone with natural fissures, some of which have developed into thin hairline cracks.Weight: 2.6 kg and 2.5 kg Dimensions: Height 17.8 cm and 17.9 cm, Length 18.5 cm and 18 cmAmethyst carvings of animals are extremely rare and this pair of doves appears to be unique. During the Qianlong era, imagery of doves carried layered meanings that resonated strongly with Qing court aesthetics and literati values. Doves and pigeons were associated with peace, harmony, and domestic virtue. Their gentle demeanor made them fitting symbols for an idealized, orderly world—an image the Qianlong court was keen to project.
