拍品描述
China, Neolithic period, 4700-2500 BC. Of iconic form, the coiled body and superbly rendered head subtly detailed with bulging eyes above flared nostrils, the neck drilled for suspension. The mostly opaque stone is of a deep russet-brown color with distinct green shadings and small translucent areas of yellow hue.Provenance: From the collection of David Taylor (1876-1958), passed down through the Taylor family to his descendants. David Taylor (1876-1958), a prominent British businessman based in Belfast, owned several commercial properties and a substantial portfolio of stocks and shares. During his travels to East Asia in the early 20th century, he acquired numerous jades, including the present lot. His grandfather, Sir David Taylor (1815-1904), was born in Perth, Scotland, and relocated to Belfast in 1842, where he served as mayor in 1867, and again in 1883 and 1884. Condition: Very good condition with expected wear, traces of weathering, signs of prolonged burial, encrustations, minor nibbling.Weight: 28.1 g Dimensions: Height 3.8 cmThis carving depicts a zhulong, or pig-dragon, a modern term that describes the animal's upturned snout, prominent bulging eyes, and coiled body. Considered to represent the prototype of depictions of mythological dragons in later Chinese art, zhulong are some of the most iconic creations of the enigmatic Hongshan culture, and evidence the existence of a complex system of belief in supernatural forces.Literature comparison:Compare a related Hongshan jade pig-dragon of similar size, 3.9 cm long, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, object number購玉000523N000000000.
