拍品描述
Expert's Note:The present jade dragon pendant shows several features that distinguish it from modern replicas and Qing dynasty archaistic copies. The surface has a fine manual polish with a soft, slightly uneven sheen typical of hand-finished ancient jades rather than modern rotary polishing. Areas of light brown mineral accretions and subtle alteration within recesses indicate burial over a long period. The carving shows characteristic lapidary marks including parallel abrasion lines along the ring and shallow grinding striations following the carved ridges. Slightly stepped transitions where planes were refined remain visible in several areas. The edges are softly rounded and show minor irregularities, all consistent with abrasive carving and hand finishing rather than sharp mechanical cutting.China, 3rd century BC. Exquisitely carved in the form of a horned dragon shown in profile with its coiled body finely detailed with spiral grooves to resemble a twisted rope, knotted at the lower end, its mouth wide open revealing sharp fangs and the eyes neatly incised. The translucent stone of a white tone with areas of pale beige calcification.Provenance: From the private collection of Alvin Lo, Hong Kong. The storage box with a label inscribed in Chinese, 'Warring States period white jade dragon ring'. Alvin Lo is a fourth-generation art collector and dealer specializing in Asian art, with particular expertise in Chinese jades and works of art. He is the fourth son of P. C. Lu, one of the most influential Hong Kong art dealers of the twentieth century. Raised in a family deeply rooted in the art world, Lo developed an early and discerning eye for quality and authenticity. In the 1990s, he founded Alvin Lo Oriental Art in Midtown Manhattan before returning to Hong Kong in the mid-2000s, where he continues his work. Over the past decades, he has published numerous scholarly catalogs and organized exhibitions internationally.
