拍品描述
China, 16th-17th century. Finely cast in the form of the mythical beast in recumbent pose, its legs drawn tightly beneath the compact body. The flanks and arched spine are crisply incised with lambent flames, the spine further articulated by rows of small punched rings, continuing into a long tail that curves elegantly to the left. The powerful head is marked by bulging, downward-cast eyes, a pronounced snout, and a sharply defined crest, lending the creature a vigilant presence. Provenance: West Berkshire, United Kingdom, local trade. By repute acquired from a private estate. Condition: Very good condition with expected wear and casting irregularities, rubbing and minor losses to gilding, sparse minor nicks and shallow surface scratches. The bronze with a fine, naturally grown, dark patina. Weight: 172.5 g (excl. stand), 191.2 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Length 6.1 cm (excl. stand), 6.8 cm (incl. stand) With an associated wood stand. (2) The 'Xiniu' is a legendary Chinese animal. In ancient Chinese texts, the term 'Xiniu' originally meant rhinoceros. In later periods, the creature became increasingly mythologized after the rhinoceros was extinct in post-archaic China. By the Song dynasty, it had become a beast of legend, known only through literary references. Animal-form weights such as the present lot have been used since antiquity, with numerous examples surviving from the Han dynasty, from which they continued to be essential for scholars in subsequent periods. The 'Guyu Tu', found in the Illustrated Compendium of Ancient Jades, notes that Zhao Mengfu once bought an ancient jade 'bixie' for use as a paperweight, indicating that scholars would sometimes appropriate favorite antiquities to serve this utilitarian function. The Xuande period in particular witnessed a renewed interest in bronze wares for the scholar's desk, including bronze animal-form weights such as the present lot. Paper weights were used to hold down paper at the four edges, so as not to interfere with reading, calligraphy, and painting.
