拍品描述
A BRONZE 'CHILONG' CENSER, LATE 16TH TO EARLY 17TH CENTURYChina. Of oval form, the vessel has low flaring sides supported on four ruyi-shaped feet. A pair of chilong are cast on either side to form the handles, each depicted with forelegs and a bifurcated tail grasping the rim, their sinuous bodies accentuated by a raised spine and finely incised fur markings extending into elongated tails. The base is cast with an apocryphal six-character mark Da Ming Xuande within a rectangular reserve.Provenance: The Finer Collection, United Kingdom. The base with a paper label from the Finer Collection inscribed with the inventory number 'CB 26'. Ian Finer is a London-based Chartered Accountant whose professional work advising clients in the antiques trade fostered a deep personal engagement with Asian art. Over several decades he assembled a highly regarded private collection of Chinese bronzes and porcelains. At its core were refined works, notably by the famed metalworker Hu Wenming and other scholars' studio pieces. Finer's collection, which he carefully curated from important auction houses, collectors, and dealers, was recognized for its museum-quality breadth and scholarly focus. Condition: Good condition with expected old wear and traces of use, mostly to the inside. Casting irregularities are present, including recesses and pitting, along with small nicks and light surface scratches. There are some ancient soldering marks visible to the interior. The surface exhibits a fine, naturally developed patina with an elegant golden-brown tone and an overall lustrous sheen.Weight: 647 g Dimensions: Length 17.8 cmThis censer adopts the form of a vessel type known in China as a 'narcissus basin' (shuixian pen), a term typically referring to a flat-based basin with gently concave, spreading sides. The shape first appeared in Chinese ceramics during the Northern Song dynasty and was subsequently adapted in a variety of materials, including bronze, for use as incense burners and scholar's objects.Literature comparison:A similar vessel is illustrated in scroll 6 of the Imperial Guwan Tu ('Pictures of Ancient Playthings') dated to 1728 in the collection of Sir Percival David currently on loan to the British Museum (accession number PDF X01), which suggests that the scholarly object also found favor at court. Compare a closely related bronze censer in the form of a narcissus bowl with chi-dragons handles, dated early 17th century, in the Saint Louis Art Museum, object number 73:2014.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's London, 15 June 2020, lot 41Price: GBP 27,500 or approx.
