拍品描述
A PAIR OF FINE BRONZE FIGURES OF BUDDHIST LIONS, LATE MING-EARLY QING DYNASTYChina, 17th-18th century. Each heavily cast in mirror image, shown in an animated stance with one forepaw raised from the ground and the head turned and raised toward the sky. The body of each finely incised with spiral tufts of fur, the bushy tail and layered mane intricately detailed, the ferocious expression marked by bulging eyes. The mouth open in a roar revealing tongue, teeth, and sharp fangs. (2)Provenance: From a private collection in the United Kingdom.Condition: Very good condition with surface wear and casting irregularities, including a visible chip on the belly of one of the lions. Sparse minor nicks and light surface scratches. It is possible that these lions once served as handles to a monumental temple censer. The bronze surface with a rich, naturally developed, dark patina.Weight: 7,751 (total)Dimensions: Length 23.7 cm (each)Lions are not native to China. Although live animals were brought to the Chinese court by foreign embassies since at least the Han dynasty, they were always exotic rarities. In India, the lion was intimately associated with Buddhism, considered a symbol of strength and protector of the Buddhist law, or 'Dharma'. With the growing popularity of the Buddhist religion during the Tang dynasty in early China, pairs of lion figures were increasingly placed in front of Buddhist temple gates as guardian animals. Its roar was said to represent the dissemination of the Buddhist scriptures, and they could also be found in their role as guardian figures lining spirit roads which lead to Imperial tombs.Auction result comparison:Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 14 September 2017, lot 723 Price: USD 20,000 or approx.
