Light nicks and shallow surface scratches mostly to the underside, few minor dents. The bronze with a fine, naturally grown patina, with small areas of verdigris. The cover has been soldered onto the back.Weight: 2,318 gDimensions: Height 19 cm, Length 20 cmThe present qilin is distinguished by its lifelike stance and refined craftsmanship. The mythical beast is among the auspicious creatures recorded in the 'Liji', or Book of Rites, dating from the Zhou dynasty, where it is listed alongside the dragon, phoenix, and tortoise as one of the four sacred animals. According to traditional descriptions, it bears a single, fleshy horn upon its forehead, and possesses a body resembling that of a horse, and is often covered in scales akin to those of a fish. Regarded as a portent of good omen, the qilin symbolizes longevity and felicity, together with the blessing of illustrious offspring and enlightened governance.Literature comparison:Compare a related bronze 'qilin' censer, dated 17th century, illustrated by Robert D.
