A RED-OVERLAY 'LOTUS POND' GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, 1800-1860China. The bottle of elongated ovoid form, supported on an oval foot and rising to a cylindrical neck with flat lip, finely carved through the outer deep ruby-red layer to the translucent milky-white ground to depict lotus flowers, buds, and pads rising from a band of waves encircling the foot, flanked by wading and flying egrets.Provenance: Robert Hall, Northumberland, United Kingdom, 6 March 2003. Ex-collection Edward A. Wrangham, Northumberland, United Kingdom, acquired from the above. A copy of the invoice from Robert Hall, Northumberland, on 6 March 2003, addressed to Mrs. E. A. Wrangham, invoice number 8629, confirming the dating above, and sold at a purchase price of GBP 5,800 or approx. EUR 12,000 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies the lot. A collection number '43[X]5' lacquered to the base. Anne Wrangham (born Jackson, 1933-2025) was a passionate and dedicated collector of Chinese snuff bottles and wife of Edward A. 'Ted' Wrangham, who formed one of the most important collections of Japanese Art in modern times. Anne's first purchase in 1966, a snuff bottle from Armin Leimgruber, Zurich, marked the beginning of her collection. Over the years, she acquired numerous pieces, many were sourced from top dealers and auction houses in London, New York, and Hong Kong. She maintained a detailed inventory, recording her purchases, along with insightful comments on the pieces she collected, which highlights her deep engagement with the objects and their contexts.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and few tiny nibbles here and there.Stopper: Tourmaline, carved spoonWeight: 37.9 gDimensions: Height including stopper 81 mm.
