AN IRON-RED 'DRAGON' SGRAFFIATO SNUFF BOTTLE, DAOGUANG PERIODChina, 1821-1850. Of double-gourd form, supported on an oval foot and rising to a slightly everted rim, the surface neatly incised with a wave pattern below the iron-red five-clawed dragon wrapping its sinuous body around the sides to catch the flaming pearl.Provenance: From the private collection of Dorothy Torbert Brink, Laguna Hills, California, United States, thence by descent to Ellison Torbert, Black Mountain, North Carolina, United States. A copy of an appraisal by Chinese snuff bottle expert Robert Hall, dated January 1985, number 65, dating the lot to 1862-1874, and valuing it to $700 or approx. EUR 1,800 (adjusted for inflation and converted at the time of writing) accompanies the lot. Dorothy 'Dee' Torbert Brink (1921-2021) was a prominent civic leader, philanthropist, and devoted collector. A graduate of Wellesley College, she married James M. Collins, a future U.S. Congressman, before his deployment during World War II. After settling in Dallas, Dee became an influential figure in the city's civic and philanthropic landscape, holding leadership positions in numerous organizations including the Junior League, the Dallas Women's Club, the Arthritis Foundation of North Texas, and Baylor University Medical Center Foundation. Ellison Torbert (1940-2009) was an accomplished artist and sculptor, known for his creative contributions and community service. A graduate of Dartmouth College, El went on to study art at Yale University, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and Fontainebleau. He volunteered with Operation Crossroads in Kenya, helping build schools and improve local communities, and later apprenticed with renowned sculptor José de Rivera. El worked as a self-employed artist, creating and selling sculptures and woodwork, and also taught art and welding at various institutions. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, some rubbing to the iron-red, and light scratches.
