拍品描述
China, 14th-15th century. Cast with a pear-shaped body rising from a stepped, splayed foot to a waisted neck and a flared, galleried mouth rim, the neck is decorated with archaic dragons, the foot encircled by a wide band of wavy patterns, and the vessel flanked by a pair of horned dragon-mask handles suspending large, loose rings.Provenance: The Finer Collection. The interior of the mouth with a paper label from the Finer Collection inscribed with the inventory number 'CB 115 A'. Ian Finer is a London-based Chartered Accountant whose professional work advising clients in the antiques trade fostered a deep personal engagement with Asian art. Over several decades he assembled a highly regarded private collection of Chinese bronzes and porcelains. At its core were refined works, notably by the famed metalworker Hu Wenming and other scholars' studio pieces. Finer's collection, which he carefully curated from important auction houses, collectors, and dealers, was recognized for its museum-quality breadth and scholarly focus. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Expected ancient wear, light surface scratches and tiny nicks. An old fill to the lower belly. The base shows soldering marks. Two apertures to the foot and underside indicate later mounting for use as a lamp.Weight: 4.9 kg Dimensions: Height 34.8 cmBronze vessels had long served as potent symbols of authority in China, and during the Ming dynasty this legacy was consciously revived through the production of archaistic bronzes. Inspired by the rediscovery of ancient ritual vessels as embodiments of a revered golden age, Ming patrons, particularly emperors and high officials, commissioned bronzes in archaic styles to assert political legitimacy and moral alignment with classical values. Far from being simple replicas of antiquity, these works represent creative reinterpretations of ancient forms and ornament.Literature comparison:Compare a related archaistic bronze vase, dated 14th-15th century, 28.7 cm, in the British Museum, museum number 1987,0523.1.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's Hong Kong, 11 June 2021, lot 3195Price: HKD 125,000 or approx.
