拍品描述
China, 12th-13th century. Heavily cast, the globular body is supported on a stepped foot and rises to an elongated cylindrical neck flanked at the rim by a pair of tubular handles. The body is divided into four panels enclosing taotie masks reserved against a key-fret ground, above a band of galloping deer alternating with projecting flanges. The neck is similarly decorated with a taotie mask band, surmounted by a pair of writhing dragons ascending toward the key-fret-patterned rim and handles. The foot is further ornamented with an additional band of taotie masks.Provenance: The Finer Collection, United Kingdom. Ian Finer is a London-based Chartered Accountant whose professional work advising clients in the antiques trade fostered a deep personal engagement with Asian art. Over several decades he assembled a highly regarded private collection of Chinese bronzes and porcelains. At its core were refined works, notably by the famed metalworker Hu Wenming and other scholars' studio pieces. Finer's collection, which he carefully curated from important auction houses, collectors, and dealers, was recognized for its museum-quality breadth and scholarly focus. Condition: Good condition with expected ancient wear, including minor casting irregularities, tiny nicks, and light surface scratches. The foot and base have been reattached, with visible soldering marks and associated touch-ups. An aperture has been drilled through the base, likely for later mounting as a lamp.Weight: 5.2 kg Dimensions: Height 46.7 cmArrow vases were made for a drinking game called 'touhu', which had been popular among elite men and women from the Spring and Autumn period. Players threw arrows into bronze or ceramic vases with narrow tubular necks at prescribed intervals, each player equidistant from the vase. The winner successfully projected all his arrows into the vase and the loser was forced to drink at each miss. Elaborate rituals and intricate rules, recorded in the Li Ji (Book of Rites), added further complexity to the game. Puzzling pitching techniques were described in the Touhu Yijie (Ceremonial Usages and Rules of Touhu), an illustrated manual written by Wang Ti (1490-1530), and these shots were given fancy names, like 'A Pair of Dragons Enters the Sea' when two arrows were thrown from a great height at once into the vase. The touhu game was used to practice archery, one of the essential accomplishments of a gentleman. Later in the Ming era, the game became more widespread and was played by rich merchants as well as the aristocracy and scholarly elite. A scene in the famous late Ming novel Jin Ping Mei (Plum Blossom in the Golden Vase), written in 1619, describes the wealthy merchant Ximen Qing's seduction of his concubine Panjinlian. She becomes inebriated while playing touhu on a picnic and the game leads to an amorous encounter. For a further discussion of the game see Isabelle Lee, 'Touhu: Three Millennia of the Chinese Arrow Vase and the Game of Pitch-pot', Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, vol. 56, 1991-2, pp. 13-7.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams Hong Kong, 29 May 2022, lot 22Price: HKD 121,125 or approx.
