拍品描述
A FINE WOOD STELE OF UMAMAHESHVARA, NEPAL, 16TH-17TH CENTURYMasterfully carved, the divine couple Shiva and Parvati seated in lalitasana, with the child Ganesha reclining at their feet. In a tender gesture of conjugal harmony, Parvati rests her right leg across the thigh of her consort while lowering her right hand in vitarka mudra. Shiva encircles the goddess with his left arm and grasps one of the long lotus stems framing the pair. Both figures are depicted bare-torsoed, richly adorned with jewelry and tall foliate crowns. Set within an elaborate torana surmounted by a fierce kirtimukha mask devouring a serpent amid scrolling foliage, and flanked by two attendant deities seated in royal ease.Provenance: From a private collection in Vienna, Austria, acquired in the Italian trade.Condition: Good condition with wear, expected age cracks, traces of weathering, minor signs of former insect activity, few small losses to extremities, remnants of gilt and pigments, minute chips, light nicks, small surface scratches. The wood with a rich, naturally grown, dark patina.Weight: 3,018 gDimensions: Height 31.5 cmUmamaheshvara represents the sacred embrace, alingana, of Lord Shiva united with the Goddess Uma, also known as Parvati. The Great Ascetic, Shiva, moved by the beauty of Uma, Daughter of the Mountain, yields to their union for the benefit of his devotees. As Stella Kramrisch has observed, this divine union is not merely an expression of conjugal affection but a theological image of profound significance. Through the intimacy of their relationship, the divine couple embodies a sacred paradigm: their union functions as a spiritual threshold through which the devotee may approach and enter their transcendent realm. See Stella Kramrisch, Manifestations of Shiva, 1981, p. 57.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related carved wood stele of Indra and his consort, Nepal, dated 15th century, 58.9 cm high, with Xanadu Gallery, San Francisco, and illustrated on Global Nepali Museum.
