拍品描述
A CRYSTAL-INLAID GILT-COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF PADMAPANI, NEPAL, 17TH CENTURYMeticulously cast and richly detailed, standing in slight tribhanga, the right hand in vitarka mudra holding the flowering utapala stem at his right shoulder. He is dressed in a flared dhoti tied at the waist with a sash, celestial scarf, and adorned with various necklaces inlaid with rock crystal. The face is downcast with heavy-lidded eyes and finely arched brows, surmounted by a foliate tiara, with the hair arranged in a high chignon topped with a diminutive figure of the Buddha Amitabha.Provenance: From the private collection of Daniele Giuseppe Mose Agiman, Italy, acquired in the mid-1980s. Daniele Giuseppe Mose Agiman is a retired professional and art collector who spent over 40 years running an export business which allowed him to travel extensively and explore his interest in art and archaeology, with a particular focus on oriental art and history.Condition: Good condition with expected wear, casting irregularities, losses to gilding, minute dings, light nicks, small surface scratches, losses to inlays. The base lost.Weight: 1,657.2 gDimensions: Height 23.8 cm (excl. tang), 25.7 cm (incl. tang)Avalokiteshvara, the Lord who looks upon the World, is the bodhisattva of compassion, and one of the principal deities in Mahayana Buddhism. Although he has attained enlightenment like the Buddha, the bodhisattva forgoes his escape from the suffering of rebirth to act as a guide to all living beings until they themselves have achieved nirvana. Worshiped in many guises, here he is depicted as Padmapani, the Lotus Bearer. Like the lotus, which rises from its murky bed below the water to blossom in the pristine air, Padmapani has detached himself from the grounding pain and impurities of the material world and is enlightened in body, speech, and mind.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 28 September 2022, lot 45 Price: USD 13,860 or approx.
