拍品描述
Finely cast seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus pedestal with beaded rims, his hands held in dhyana mudra, dressed in a flowing robe that winds gracefully around the arms and gathers in rhythmic folds around the legs. The hems delicately incised, his body adorned with a billowing scarf and beaded jewelry finely inlaid with turquoise and coral. The serene face with heavy-lidded downcast eyes, arched brows, circular urna, and smiling lips, flanked by elongated lobes, the hair pulled up into a knotted chignon topped by a jewel.Provenance: From a private collection in southern Germany. The interior with an old label, inscribed 'Amitayus BT40. Tibet, 17. Jh.', 'W. Tibet 15. Jh.', and 'C22 um 1600'.Condition: Good condition with old wear and casting irregularities, expected rubbing and losses to gilding, minor losses to inlays with some possibly replaced, slight warping, few minute nicks, shallow surface scratches. The base unsealed. Rich, naturally grown, warm patina with some verdigris to the interior.Weight: 512.1 gDimensions: Height 18.2 cmThe present work exhibits many characteristics common to the Buddhist workshops of the Kangxi to early Qianlong period, such as the combination of cast and repoussé parts, the languid and slightly effeminate treatment of the face and body, and the tightly waisted double-lotus base with broad petals. The Qing court patronage of Buddhism that began under the Kangxi Emperor reached epic proportions under his grandson, Qianlong. The Buddhist centers of Beijing, Rehol, and Dolonnor produced thousands upon thousands of images to keep up with the demand of the numerous temples in and outside the capital.Amitayus, a form of the Buddha Amitabha in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, is associated with longevity, wisdom, and immortality. He is typically depicted wearing an ornate crown and holding a vase of Amrita, the nectar of immortality. In Tibetan and Nepalese Buddhist art, Amitayus plays a central role in longevity rituals, revered for overcoming karmic obstacles. His image is widely represented in sculptures and temple decorations, symbolizing enlightenment and the aspiration for a long, spiritually fulfilled life.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's Paris, 8 November 2022, lot 101Price: EUR 30,240 or approx.
