拍品描述
Central Himalayan regions, probably Tibet or Bhutan. Seated in dhyanasana atop a separately cast double-lotus pedestal, holding a vajra in his right hand and a kapala surmounted by a small vase filled with the elixir of life in his left, his fingernails finely inlaid in copper. His serene face is marked by almond-shaped silver eyes with incised pupils below arched brows, and bow-shaped copper lips forming a benevolent smile.Guru Rinpoche is dressed in heavy monastic robes billowing and cascading in richly carved folds, decorated with minutely beaded hems, stylized flowerheads, and neatly incised shou characters, all sumptuously inlaid in gold, silver, and copper. The iconic pema hat centered by sun and moon emblems is similarly beaded and inlaid, and surmounted by a vajra finial. (2)Provenance: From a private collection in the United Kingdom. Condition: Good condition, with expected wear and casting irregularities, scattered nicks and scratches, small dings, and a few minor losses to the inlays. The back of the figure shows a V-shaped crack with small associated losses. The base is unsealed. The top of the base is drilled with two holes into which pegs on the underside of the figure are inserted. The base is most likely earlier in date than the statue—possibly by one or two centuries—which accords with documented practice in Tibetan monasteries, where older, revered bases were sometimes reused to honor later, particularly significant sculptures.Weight: 8,692 gDimensions: Height 40 cmPadmasambhava (literally 'lotus-born' in Sanskrit), also known as Guru Rinpoche among Tibetans, is believed to be one of the principal masters to bring Buddhism to Tibet and to teach the tantras in the 8th century. He is depicted in numerous forms with different names representing outer, inner and secret aspects of his spiritual being, with the change of names following the chronology of his life story. In the 5th century BC, Buddha Shakyamuni arrived as the founder of Buddhism. His teachings were subsumed by the Sutrayana and the Tantryana. In the 8th century, Padmasambhava personified the guru principle, the ritualistic path of Buddhism and the heart of Vajrayana Buddhism. They are exemplified in its flourishing after it was introduced into Tibet and the Himalayas between the 7th and 11th centuries. Because of Padmasambhava's teachings and contribution, he is known as the 'Second Buddha.'Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's New York, 23 March 2007, lot 59Price: USD 31,200 or approx.
