拍品描述
Finely cast seated in dhyanasana upon a double-lotus base with beaded rims, the right hand lowered in bhumisparsha mudra and the left resting in dhyana mudra upon the lap. The figure is clad in a diaphanous monastic robe draped over the right shoulder, leaving the chest partially exposed, the hems delicately beaded and the pleats falling in graceful folds that gather naturally about the crossed legs. The serene face is sensitively modeled with sinuously lidded eyes beneath softly arched brows, a broad nose, and full lips, framed by long pendulous earlobes. The hair is arranged in tight curls covering the domed ushnisha, which is surmounted by a bud-shaped jewel. The base sealed with a copper plate neatly incised with a double vajra.Provenance: German trade. Acquired from an estate sale in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear, casting irregularities, some warping and minor dents mostly to base, few small shallow fissures at the neck, minute nicks, light surface scratches, little rubbing and losses to gilt, remnants of ancient pigment.Weight: 411.3 gDimensions: Height 10.2 cmCast with gentle features evoking quiet introspection, this elegantly modeled figure of the Buddha Shakyamuni reenacts his defiance and victory over Mara and his demonic forces at Bodhgaya, India. Based on its well-defined upper torso and sweet expression, such as its heavy eyelids, a broad nose, and an enlarged lower lip, this figure was inspired by the northeast Indian traditions of late Pala period sculpture (c. 750-950). At the same time, the sinuous eyelids, incised brows, and rich beading reflect the growing influence of Newari ateliers.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Pala style bronze figure of Buddha Shakyamuni, Tibet, 12th-13th century, in the Jokhang, Lhasa, and illustrated by Ulrich von Schroeder, Buddhist Sculptures in Tibet, vol. 2, 2003, p. 1095, no. 282D. See a Pala bronze Buddha from Kurkihar, illustrated by von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, 1981, p. 287, no. 71B.
