拍品描述
AN INSCRIBED COPPER REPOUSSé VAJRACHARYA CROWN, NEPALThe reverse is neatly incised with a Nepalese inscription in Devanagari script including the date 'Samvat 2006', which corresponds to 1949. The crown itself predates the inscription and is from the 19th century.Finely chased and hammered, it is of domed form composed of three tiers and surmounted by a double-vajra finial. The front is adorned with a tiara formed by five large petal-shaped mandorlas, each enclosing one of the Five Directional Buddhas—Ratnasambhava, Akshobhya, Vairocana, Amitabha, and Amoghasiddhi. Each figure is shown seated in dhyanasana on a lotus pedestal, clad in monastic robes, and bearing a serene meditative expression. The reverse with a bow in high relief imitating the fastening of the tiara at the nape.Provenance: From the collection of Farah Massart, Belgium. After earning a degree in languages and building a career in business management, she reoriented her life toward Southeast Asian and Indian art, founding her gallery Famarte in 2012. Now based in Meise near Brussels with a summer pop-up in Knokke, Famarte specializes in high-quality sculpture, ritual objects, and contemporary Asian art, welcoming collectors in a personal setting. Small old repairs. Rich, naturally grown, dark patina.Weight: 580.2 gDimensions: Height 23.5 cmThis ritual crown, known in Sanskrit as 'vajracharya', was worn by Newar Buddhist priests of the Vajrayana tradition in the Kathmandu Valley during liturgical practice and ceremonial officiation. It functioned in rites of empowerment and in the initiation of practitioners into Tantric disciplines. Within Newar society, Vajracharya designated both a hereditary caste and a family name. The title authorized its bearers to perform priestly functions reserved to their lineage, in a role comparable to that of Brahmins within Hindu religious practice. Through its donning, as noted by Pratapaditya Pal, the officiant became identified with a cosmic principle or divine essence. in Pratapaditya Pal, Art of the Himalayas, 1991, p. 49.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related bronze Vajracharya priest crown, Nepal, dated 1864 by inscription, 29.2 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 36.25.2979. Compare a related copper and brass vajracharya crown, Nepal, dated 19th-20th century, in the Welt Museum, Vienna.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 20 March 2019, lot 687 Price: USD 7,500 or approx.
