A CARVED CONCH-SHELL TRUMPET, DUNG DKAR, WITH A PARCEL-GILT SILVER REPOUSSé MOUNT DEPICTING AMITAYUS, 17TH-18TH CENTURYTibet. The white shell carved in high relief with a wrathful Dharmapala standing in dynamic posture, holding a skull cup (kapala) in his left hand and a ritual flaying knife (kartika) in his right. His bare torso framed by a billowing shawl, the fierce expression encircled by a garland of severed heads and a flaming mane. The shell mounted with a finely chased and incised silver mouthpiece and shaft, attached to a large gently curved wing. The wing decorated in parcel-gilt with Amitayus seated in dhyanasana upon a lotus pedestal, his hands resting in his lap holding the vase of immortality (amrita). The serene deity framed by a flowing shawl and flanked by two attendant bodhisattvas seated in royal ease, all set against a dense ground of scrolling foliage. The reverse of the wing finely incised with a double vajra.Provenance: From a private collection in Vienna, Austria, acquired in the local trade.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, traces of use, manufacturing irregularities, natural imperfections, expected minor tarnish to silver, light warping and small dents, few minute nicks and shallow surface scratches. Fine, naturally grown patina.Weight: 2,453 gDimensions: Length 36.3 cmThe conch shell (Tibetan: 'dung'), a symbol of the voice of the Buddha, represents the transmission of Buddhist teachings. This conch trumpet is both an auspicious symbol and a ritual implement in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. During ritual performances, it is used as a musical instrument and as a container for water. The elaborate decoration of real conch shells, such as the present example, became prominent in the seventeenth century.Literature comparison:Compare a related parcel-gilt copper mounted conch shell trumpet, included in the Tantra exhibition at the Arts Council of Great Britain, London, 1971, and sold by Michael Backman Ltd, London, inventory number 8425, dated circa 1800 or earlier.
