拍品描述
A PAIR OF GILT COPPER REPOUSSé SNOW LIONS, TIBET, 17TH-18TH CENTURYEach finely hammered and expressively modeled in mirror image, the pair poised in dynamic confrontation upon sharp claws. Their luxuriant, deep garnet-red tails arch elegantly behind them, while the raised forearms grasp the cord of a shell chain across the chest. The heads are framed by flowing manes and characterized by bulging eyes with large pupils beneath pronounced brows, above broad snouts with pierced gaping jaws revealing sharp fangs, each with an inlaid coral to the neck. (2)Provenance: From a private collection in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.Condition: Good condition with expected old wear and casting irregularities, encrustations and minor surface corrosion to reverse, light warping and small dents, rubbing and minor losses to gilding, the pigments possibly added later, shallow surface scratches. Each with a small aperture to either side of the head. Rich, naturally grown, dark patina.Weight: 986.2 g (total)Dimensions: Length 31.6 cm (each)As the celestial animal and national emblem of Tibet, the snow lion symbolizes power and strength. Traditionally placed above temple entrances or upon altars inserted within the Torana, the arch of glory which surrounds the divinity, it serves as a vigilant guardian and protector and is often shown with its jaws parted, as if emitting a menacing growl, to ward off evil spirits.Literature comparison:Compare a related gilt bronze figure of a snow lion, Tibet, illustrated in Himalayan Art Resources, item no. 13114.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's New York, 20 March 2002, lot 62Price: USD 15,275 or approx.
