A TIBETAN-CHINESE PARCEL-GILT COPPER REPOUSSé JAR AND COVER, 19TH CENTURYExpert's note: The present jar takes as its model the elaborately crafted teapots distinguished by dragon-form handles and spouts issuing from the jaws of mythological water creatures that have been widely employed throughout the Tibetan cultural sphere since at least the sixteenth century. While individual examples vary subtly in style, they consistently retain a core repertoire of decorative and structural elements.Among these are the characteristic lotus-form foot, foliate panels in high relief adorning the body of the vessel, repeated floral motifs executed in a variety of chasing and incising techniques, and the distinctive bud-shaped finial that customarily surmounts the cover, all features likewise found in the present lot. Such works attest to the remarkable technical skill of Tibetan-Chinese metalworkers, particularly masters of repoussé. Vessels of this type were reserved for special occasions, including weddings and other ceremonial observances, or for the reception of distinguished guests.Finely worked, the ovoid body supported on a broad spreading foot, the high rounded shoulders rising to a cylindrical neck with a galleried rim. The exterior richly decorated with four gilt foliate cartouches worked in relief, enclosing shou characters encircled by lotus petals surrounded by flying bats amid swirling clouds, reserved against a minutely ring-punched ground. The body further incised with bats, chimes, and lotus scroll, above bands of gilt lotus petals encircling the foot, the neck incised with floral scroll on a ring-punched ground repeated on the rim of the cover below gilt bands of lotus scroll and petals, topped by the neatly incised bud-form finial.Provenance: From a private collection in Austria.Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear, traces of use, manufacturing irregularities, few minute nicks, light surface scratches, occasional small dents. The copper with a fine, naturally grown patina.Weight: 2,946 gDimensions: Height 41.3 cmThe base incised with an apocryphal six-character mark da Qing Qianlong nianzhi.Literature comparison:Compare a related parcel-gilt mixed-metal repoussé teapot, Tibet, 18th century, 32 cm high, in the British Museum, registration number 1933,0508.126. Compare a related Tibetan repoussé brass vase and cover Compare a related smaller Tibetan repoussé copper and brass jar and lid, dated “probably” 19th century, 9.5 cm high, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number IS.13&A-1965.
