A LARGE CORAL AND TURQUOISE-INLAID SILVER REPOUSSé 'ASHTAMANGALA' BUTTER LAMP, CHO-KUNG, 18TH-19TH CENTURYTibet. The deep cup raised on a two-tiered stem atop a conical foot, all richly embellished with coral and turquoise inlays. Finely chased and embossed to depict the Eight Buddhist Emblems (ashtamangala) emerging amidst densely arranged foliate scrolls in high relief against a minutely ring-punched ground, below a key-fret band encircling the rim, the upper stem with three bands of lotus petals and the lower with a foliate design below incised clouds, the foot with alternating roundels enclosing chilong and turquoise-inlaid Triratna flanked by further chilong writhing amid clouds, framed by floral zig-zag bands, above a key-fret band around the foot.Provenance: German trade. Acquired from a local estate sale.Condition: Good condition with expected old wear and casting irregularities, minor tarnish, light warping and few small dents, minute nicks, shallow surface scratches, some inlays possibly replaced or reattached.Weight: 922.8 gDimensions: Height 28.4 cmThe present butter lamp is a quintessential accoutrement of Tibetan altars and domestic shrines. It is fashioned in the form of a chalice, a type of vessel associated in the West with elite secular goblets and with consecrated drinking cups used in Christian liturgical services. The adoption of the chalice form in Tibet likely reflects contact with Central Asian Christian communities during the seventh and eighth centuries. In ritual practice, these lamps are traditionally fueled with clarified yak butter, whose steady flame symbolizes the dispelling of ignorance and the cultivation of wisdom. The butter lamps help to focus the mind and aid meditation. According to the Root tantra of the Chakrasa?vara Tantra, "If you wish for sublime realization, offer hundreds of lights".Literature comparison:Compare a pair of related parcel-gilt butter lamps with coral and turquoise inlay from Eastern Tibet, Kham region, Derge, 18th century, 27.9 cm high, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, accession numbers M.78.23a and -b. Compare a related Tibetan silver butter lamp, dated 18th century, 16.8 cm high, illustrated in Pratapaditya Pal, The Art of Tibet, 1969, p. 121, no. 103.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Bonhams New York, 17 March 2014, lot 51Price: USD 12,500 or approx.
