拍品描述
A RARE 'FOUR GUARDIANS' GILT-COPPER REPOUSSé AND MARBLE BOWL, LIAO DYNASTYChina, 907-1125. Finely carved, with deep, rounded sides rising from a short, straight foot to a gently everted rim. The exterior decorated with a neatly incised gilt-coppers appliqués in openwork comprising four lobed panels, each with a mythical creature representing one of the Four Guardians. The panels separated by a neatly ring-punched ground, interspersed with scrolling tendrils. The translucent stone is of an appealing cream color, with an interplay of celadon and russet tones, suffused with cloudy inclusions and creamy-white veining.Provenance: West Berkshire trade, United Kingdom. Acquired from a private estate.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, showing expected old wear and minor manufacturing irregularities. The gilt-copper exhibits light warping, minor corrosion, rubbing, and small losses to the gilding, including a small loss to the tip of one dragon's mane. The marble shows natural fissures, some of which have developed into fine hairline cracks. Areas of verdigris and malachite encrustation are present. Both the stone and the repoussé retain a good, naturally grown patina.Weight: 195.3 gDimensions: Height 4.9 cm, Diameter 9.8 cmThe Four Guardians (Chin. 'sixiang') are mythological creatures appearing among the Chinese constellations along the ecliptic and viewed as the guardians of the four cardinal directions. They are the Azure Dragon of the East, the Vermilion Bird of the South, the White Tiger of the West, and the Black Tortoise of the North. Each of the creatures is most closely associated with a cardinal direction and a color, but also additionally represents other aspects, including a season of the year, an emotion, virtue, and one of the Chinese 'five elements'. Each has been given its own individual traits, origin story, and a reason for being. Symbolically, and as part of spiritual and religious belief and meaning, these creatures have been culturally important across countries in the Sinosphere.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related pale celadon jade bowl with gilt-metal mounted decoration, illustrated by Christian Deydier, L'or des Qidan et 'Influence Artistique de l'Empire du Tibet, p. 28-29.Auction result comparison:Type: Related Auction: Zacke Vienna, 9 March 2023, lot 19Price: EUR 6,500 or approx.
