拍品描述
A GILT-SILVER REPOUSSé 'PHOENIX' FRAGMENT, LIAO DYNASTYChina, 916-1125. Finely embossed, chased, and neatly incised to depict a phoenix in flight with outstretched wings and intricately worked feathers, surrounded by thick swirling clouds, the right side with a flaming pearl, all against a minutely ring-punched ground.Provenance: Collection of Dr. Helmut Ploog, Munich, Germany, assembled from 1965 onwards and thence by descent. Dr. Helmut Ploog (1940-2024) was among the most influential and respected graphologists in the German-speaking world. Over the course of a distinguished career as an expert witness, educator, and author, he published a series of seminal works that are now regarded as standard references in the study of handwriting and character analysis. Beyond his professional achievements, Ploog cultivated a deep commitment to the arts. He assembled a notable collection of Asian art, including significant Chinese and Thai works. He donated part of his collection, among them several important Khmer sculptures, to the Weltmuseum in Vienna. Condition: Fragmentary condition, commensurate with age. Expected wear, signs of burial, obvious losses, minor tears and cracks, rubbing to gilt, tarnishing to silver. Fine, naturally grown patina with scattered malachite encrustation.Weight: 1,056 g Dimensions: Length 26.2 cmMounted and framed. (2)The motifs and craftsmanship of this fragment are closely related to the gold and silver wares of the nomadic Khitan Empire. The present lot was probably once part of an important ceremonial garment or ornament worn by a high-ranking female aristocrat during the Liao dynasty, most likely a waist guard (see literature comparison). Intricately made from a gilt-silver sheet featuring a design of phoenix amid elaborate scrolls, it is not only a symbol of the prestigious social status of its original owner, but also a testament to the technical mastery achieved by the skillful metal workers of the Liao dynasty. The phoenix motif can be found on a number of important objects excavated in 1986 from the tomb of the Princess and Prince Consort of the State of Chen (c. 1018), now in the Research Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology of Inner Mongolia, Hohhot, including a pair of crowns, illustrated in Zhang Jingming, Zhongguo beifang caoyuan gudai jinyin qi (The Ancient Gold and Silver Wares from the Northern Steppe of China), Beijing, 2005, pls. 121-2, and a silver and parcel gilt repoussé double-phoenix pillow, illustrated in Zhongguo jinyin boli falangqi quanji: Gold and Silver ware 2, Hebei, 2004, p.175, pl. 316.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related waist guard decorated with a double-phoenix motif from the Mengdiexuan Collection, included in the exhibition Hunters, Warriors, Spirits: Nomadic Art of North China, City University of Hong Kong, 23 July-23 October 2022.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 19 January 2023, lot 3038 Price: HKD 119,700 or approx.
