拍品描述
Distemper on cloth. Mounted as a hanging scroll within a two-colored linen frame. The composition belongs to the Nyingma tradition, in which Samantabhadra is revered as the Primordial Buddha. He is shown in union with his wisdom consort Samantabhadri, both seated in meditative equipoise within a resplendent open lotus set upon a luminous white moon disc. Radiant bands of rainbow light emanate from their aureole, illuminating the darkened sky and rolling landscape beyond. Beneath the principal pair appears a smaller depiction of the white Transcendental Buddha Vairochana in embrace with his consort Akasadhatvisvari, enthroned upon a lotus supported by lions, his traditional mount. The remaining Four Transcendental Buddhas are represented within mandalas placed at the four corners of the composition. These are interspersed with the Six Buddhas of the Six Realms and flanked by wrathful Heruka figures in union. The upper register is populated by lineage lamas and celestial deities, while the lower register presents a row of Heruka with consorts. Beneath them are protective deities, including Dorje Legpa riding a lion, Rahula with the coiled naga lower body, and Acala brandishing a sword, reinforcing the tantric and protective dimensions of the painting.Inscriptions: The verso with a stupa and inscribed with a mantra.Provenance: From a deceased estate in Vienna, Austria. Condition: Very good condition with old wear, soiling, light creasing and folds, little flaking to pigments, and some stains. Minor touchups. The mounting well-preserved overall, the silk cover with losses.Dimensions: Image size 71.5 x 53.5 cm, Size incl. frame 126 x 71 cmLiterature comparison:Compare a closely related thangka depicting peaceful and wrathful deities, Hahn Cultural Foundation, and published by Jeff Watt on Himalayan Art Resources, item no. 18707.
