拍品描述
A LARGE (166 x 127 CM) THANGKA DEPICTING THE GREEN TARA OF THE SANDALWOOD FOREST, HIMALAYAN REGION, 18TH-19TH CENTURY Distemper and gold paint on cloth. Seated in lalitasana on a lotus base, the right hand lowered in the gesture of supreme generosity and holding the stem of a lotus blossoming at the right ear, the left hand holding an utpala between the thumb and ring finger at the heart, blossoming at the left ear. She wears elaborate jewel ornaments and flowing silks, the hair neatly drawn away from the face and crowned with a tall tiara. The deity is flanked by the orange Marichi holding a branch of the Ashoka tree and Ekajati holding a skullcup, the latter clad in a tiger skin, both adorned with jewels and fine silks. She is further attended by animal-headed Bardo deities, all set within the courtyard of a celestial palace in a sandalwood grove in the pure land of Potala, on an island in the South Indian Sea.In the four corners outside the palace sit four celestial beings within temple shrines, each with an attendant offering a jewel.Provenance: Acquired by the father of the present owner in Tibet around 1970 and thence by descent. Condition: Good condition with expected wear, minor creasing and folds, the reverse reinforced, soiling, and some flaking to the pigments. Touch-ups may be present. Overall, displaying exceptionally well.Dimensions: Size 166 x 127 cmGreen Tara's Pure Land is envisioned as a radiant lotus garden or celestial palace, a realm suffused with her enlightened compassion. Known as Utpala-vana or a Tara-loka, this Pure Land is not a fixed geographic location but a spiritual domain where she manifests to aid sentient beings. Within this luminous space, Tara appears surrounded by attendants and protective deities, ready to offer guidance, protection, and swift assistance to those who call upon her. The depiction of her seated on a multi-coloured lotus throne reflects both her accessibility and her transcendent, liberating presence.According to Buddhist scripture, the bardo is a realm or intermediate state between death and rebirth where one's consciousness experiences vivid phenomena, including horrifying imagery related to negative karmic debts. For those with proper Buddhist training, this stage can provide great opportunity for liberation, allowing them to overcome illusion and worldly attachment. Animal-headed deities who inhabit the bardo realms are typically depicted in painting. Literature comparison:Compare a closely related, smaller thangka depicting Green Tara of the Sandalwood Forest, Tibet, 19th century, in the Rubin Museum of Art, accession number P1996.8.1, and illustrated by Jeff Watt on Himalayan Art Resources, item no. 239.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams New York, 19 March 2021, lot 376Price: USD 8,925 or approx.
