拍品描述
A SANDSTONE FIGURE OF UMA, ANGKOR PERIOD, BAPHUON STYLE, 11TH CENTURYKhmer Empire. Sensitively and sensuously carved in graceful outline, with a sarong draped around her hips and falling in finely incised parallel pleats with a fishtail sash at center, secured with a plain belt tied in a knot at the front. Her serene expression with almond-shaped eyes, bow-shaped lips forming a calm smile, and a dimpled chin, her hair neatly arranged in rows of braids drawn up into a high chignon secured by a plain band and surmounted by a floret.Provenance: French trade. Acquired from a local estate sale in Amiens, France. Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear, obvious losses, natural fissures with associated fills and touchups, some rubbing, small nicks, scattered nibbling, encrustations, and signs of weathering and erosion.Weight: 21.2 kg (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 75.5 cm (excl. stand), 84 cm (incl. stand)Mounted on an associated metal stand. (2)This statue exemplifies the style of Baphuon female figures with the frontal stance, the ovoid skirt wide at the hips and narrowing around the knees, the sampot in an elevated position at the back and curving down to below the navel and the elegant central pleat. According to Boisselier the highly decorative style of Banteay Srei inspired the development of Baphuon period sculpture, a manner which became more embellished with decorative elements as it reached a zenith during the Angkor period a century later, see Helen Ibbitson Jessup and Thierry Zephir, editors, Sculpture of Angkor and Ancient Cambodia - Millennium of Glory, Washington 1997, page 255.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams Paris, 25 October 2022, lot 77Price: EUR 57,075 or approx.
