拍品描述
A SANDSTONE HEAD OF A MALE DEITY WITH MOUNT MERU CHIGNON, KHMER, PRE RUP STYLE, 10TH CENTURYKhmer Empire, circa 944-968. Sensitively carved, the serene face with narrow almond-shaped eyes beneath gently arched brows, the pupils finely incised, with delicate facial hair and full lips, flanked by long, pendulous earlobes with vertical slits. The finely incised hair is arranged in stylized rows rising to a conical chignon secured by a foliate tiara tied neatly at the back. The tall, tiered chignon is characteristic of Khmer sculpture of the Pre Rup style. Its stepped, architectural form may allude to sacred temple towers and ultimately to Mount Meru, the cosmic mountain at the center of the universe in Hindu cosmology. Such headdresses visually reinforce the divine status of the deity and reflect the Khmer conception of cosmic order, in which temple architecture, royal authority, and divine imagery were closely intertwined.Provenance: From a private collection in California.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, obvious losses, some rubbing, small nicks, scattered nibbling, encrustations, and signs of weathering and erosion.Weight: 4,701 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 24.5 cm (excl. stand), 32.5 cm (incl. stand)Mounted on an associated metal stand. (2)Expert's note: This finely carved head reflects the stylistic developments associated with the Pre Rup period of Khmer art, characterized by softer, more naturalistic facial modeling compared to the earlier, more rigid forms of the Koh Ker style.Pre Rup is a major Hindu temple built under the Khmer king Rajendravarman II (r. 944-968) and consecrated in 961 or early 962. Constructed primarily of brick and laterite, the temple formed part of the renewed Angkorian capital and served as a state temple dedicated to Shiva. Sculptures from this period often reflect the concept of the Devaraja, or “god-king,” a political and religious ideology that linked the ruler to the divine and legitimized royal authority. Within this framework, Khmer temple imagery frequently combined Hindu iconography with idealized features that could evoke the reigning monarch, expressing both religious devotion and royal power.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's Paris, 20 June 2017, lot 168Mid-estimate: EUR 17,500 or approx. EUR 21,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: Polished sandstone head of a male deity, Cambodia, Khmer, Pre-Rup period, 10th centuryExpert remark: Compare the closely related modeling of the hair crowned by the flaring tiara. Note the size (22 cm).
