A BRONZE 'TWELVE FROG' BRACELET, DONG SON CULTURE, NORTHERN VIETNAM, CIRCA 100 BCPublished & Exhibited: Martin Doustar, Austronesia & Beyond, Parcours des Mondes 2023, Paris, no. 6.The two-part bracelet finely decorated to the exterior with a chain of twelve overlapping frogs, each amphibian cast squatting with its limbs spread to the sides, the edges beaded. The bronze with a naturally grown patina with vibrant malachite encrustations.Provenance: Collection of Martin Doustar, Brussels, Belgium. Martin Doustar is a Brussels-based art dealer and collector whose career spans more than two decades. He began his professional journey in the early 2000s with a focus on Modern Art, developing a keen interest in the ways early twentieth-century artists were influenced by 'primitive' art from Africa and Oceania. Over time, his connoisseurship expanded into archaeological and ethnographic fields, with particular expertise in the ancient arts of the Pacific, Africa, and pre-Columbian America, while also encompassing Asian material culture and modern masterpieces. He is the author of numerous scholarly catalogs and has organized thematic exhibitions on a wide range of subjects.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, losses, and encrustations indicating a prolonged period of burial. The bronze is covered in a rich, naturally grown patina with vibrant malachite encrustations.Weight: 237 g (excl. stand), 361 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Width 8.5 cm (excl. stand), Height 12.5 cm (incl. stand)Dong Son (named for Dong Son, a village in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam) was a Bronze Age culture in ancient Vietnam centered at the Red River Valley of northern Vietnam from 1000 BC until the first century AD. Vietnamese historians attribute it to the states of Van Lang and Au L?c. Its influence spread to other parts of Southeast Asia, including Maritime Southeast Asia, throughout the first millennium BC. The culture long remained a mystery to western archaeologists, and it was known only through its bronze objects, many of which were taken from burial sites. Dong Son bronze objects were exhibited in Europe for a century before their original location was even determined, and several theories and speculations over the dating methodologies of the culture continue to this day.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related bronze two-part bracelet with frogs, Northern Vietnam, Dong Son culture, dated to the 1st century, 11 cm wide, in the Barbier-Mueller Museum, Geneva, inventory number 2505-44, illustrated in Laurence Mattet (ed.), Art de Dong Son: Asie du Sud-Est Dans les Collections Barbier-Mueller, 2021, p. 99, cat. no. 52.
