拍品描述
A RARE FEMALE HUMANOID BRONZE FIGURE, DONG SON CULTUREVietnam, 500 BC-300 AD. Finely cast, the standing figure gazing forward, the arms angled and held low at the waist, the feet extended as she stands on her tiptoes. The nipples and crotch are neatly decorated with spiral designs, while the flattened oval face is distinguished by bulging eyes, a protruding flat nose, and stylized full lips appearing to blow air, framed by flat ears likewise rendered with spiral motifs.Provenance: The private collection of Yves Bonan, Venice, Italy. Collection of Martin Doustar, Brussels, Belgium, acquired from the above. Martin Doustar is a Brussels-based art dealer and collector whose career spans more than two decades. He began his professional journey in the early 2000s with a focus on Modern Art, developing a keen interest in the ways early twentieth-century artists were influenced by 'primitive' art from Africa and Oceania. Over time, his connoisseurship expanded into archaeological and ethnographic fields, with particular expertise in the ancient arts of the Pacific, Africa, and pre-Columbian America, while also encompassing Asian material culture and modern masterpieces. He is the author of numerous scholarly catalogs and has organized thematic exhibitions on a wide range of subjects.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age, with ancient wear and expected casting irregularities. Traces of weathering and signs of erosion. Few minor nicks, light scratches, and encrustations. The surface with a fine malachite-green patina with areas of soil encrustation.Weight: 56.2 g (excl. stand),120.5 g (incl. stand)Dimensions: Height 12.2 cm (excl. stand), 13.1 cm (incl. stand)With an associated stand. (2)The spiral motif, seen in the chest ornaments and the ring armlets, is typical of the Dong Son culture and likely represents prestige goods such as shells and metalwork, serving to emphasize the rank and status of the figure.Dong Son (named for Dong Son, a village in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam) was a Bronze Age culture in ancient Vietnam centered at the Red River Valley of northern Vietnam from 1000 BC until the first century AD. Vietnamese historians attribute it to the states of Van Lang and Au L?c. Its influence spread to other parts of Southeast Asia, including Maritime Southeast Asia, throughout the first millennium BC. The culture long remained a mystery to Western archaeologists, and it was known only through its bronze objects, many of which were taken from burial sites. Dong Son bronze objects were exhibited in Europe for a century before their original location was even determined, and several theories and speculations over the dating methodologies of the culture continue to this day.Literature comparison:Compare a related seated male figure with similar spiral motifs, 8.9 cm high, dated 500 BC-300 AD, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 2000.287.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Galerie Zacke, 16 October 2021, lot 579 Price: EUR 15,168 or approx.
