拍品描述
A RARE LIMESTONE FIGURE OF A ZEBU, NORTHWESTERN IRAN, CASPIAN REGION, CIRCA 1000 BCBoldly carved standing foursquare on short legs, the mouth reminiscent of the pouring spout of a rhyton, flanked by two horns incised with circular eyes above two pierced ears, and with a prominent hump and hindquarters. The opaque stone is of a beige color with dark gray and brown inclusions. The surface retains a fine, old polish of notable quality, imparting a smooth, almost silky feel to the touch—an effect further enriched by centuries of handling, which have softened the contours and deepened the patina.Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum, acquired in London in the mid-1990s. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe. In December 2025, he was awarded medals of national recognition by the Royal Government of Cambodia for his exceptional contributions to the scientific study, preservation, and international understanding of Angkor and Koh Ker. Zelnik founded the Hungarian Southeast Asian Institute in the early 2000s. The Institute supported a range of research programs at Angkor and Koh Ker, including archaeological surveys, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) investigations, epigraphic studies, and historical research. These efforts have contributed to a deeper understanding of the Angkorian empire, the pre-Angkor period, and Cambodia's prehistoric times. Research supported by the institute played a key role in raising international awareness of Koh Ker and led to its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Condition: Very good condition with extensive wear, traces of weathering and erosion, signs of prolonged burial, small nicks and losses, the stone with natural fissures, some of which have developed into thin hairline cracks. Wirth a fine, naturally grown patina.Weight: 243.7 g Dimensions: 11.2 cmZebu cattle are thought to be derived from the Indian bos primigenius namadicus, a subspecies of the aurochs. Believed to have first been bred in northwestern Asia, between 7000 and 6000 BC, they are understood to have been dispersed by 4000 BC and spread across much of Asia by 2000 BC.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related ceramic vessel in the shape of a zebu, northwestern Iran, Caspian region, dated ca. 1000 BC, 36.5 cm long, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 61.263.
