拍品描述
A CHLORITE 'BOVINE AND SNAKE' HANDBAG WEIGHT, JIROFT CULTURE, 3RD MILLENNIUM BCSoutheastern Iran, c. 2800-2300 BC. Of gently rounded rectangular form with an overhanging rounded handle, boldly carved on both sides to depict a large bull and a great serpent coiling around its elongated body. The torso of the snake distinguished by two parallel series of circular recesses to take inlays.Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.Condition: Fair condition with ancient wear, significant weathering and erosion with associated deterioration, scratches, chips, and remnants of old varnish.Weight: 3,853 gDimensions: Length 21.8 cmThis weight belongs to a distinctive group of chlorite artefacts from southeastern Iran, conventionally designated as Jiroft, after the region in which they were produced in antiquity. The motif of a bovine engaged in combat with a serpent coiling around its body is recurrent on works of this type. It appears repeatedly within the well-known corpus of artefacts attributed to this culture. See Yousef Madjidzadeh, Jiroft: The Earliest Civilization, 2003, p. 76-94.In the region of Jiroft, Southern Iran, a large number of chlorite vessels and objects, carrying human and animal motifs, have been discovered. This discovery is of particular importance since little is known about the history of the region, and its proximity to the Cradle of Civilization makes it of vital importance to understanding the environment in which the first written historical records emerged. In the first half of the third millennium BC, the Iranian plateau was at the crossroads of trade with its neighboring regions. It is located a thousand kilometers from the Valley of the Euphrates in the west and from the Indus River in the east. The exceptional development of the Jiroft culture can be accounted for by the distinctive environment of the region, which is in a deep depression, very different from the broad basins created on the plateau by the disappearance of large salt lakes.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related chlorite handbag weight, Jiroft culture, Iran, Kerman Province, c. 2500 BC, in the National Museum of Iran, Tehran.
