拍品描述
A SIKH STEEL QUOIT, CHAKRAM, NORTHERN INDIA, 19TH CENTURYThe disc made of flat steel finely incised to both sides with a floral band of alternating blossoms framed within raised borders. The outer edge sharpened.Fun Fact!In the James Bond film Goldfinger (1964), the antagonist character Oddjob wields a bowler hat fitted with a concealed steel chakram as a lethal weapon. The prop hat from the film subsequently entered the auction market, achieving GBP 62,000 at Christie's in 1998, underscoring the enduring cultural resonance of this legendary martial motif.Provenance: Canadian trade. Acquired from a private estate in Toronto, Canada. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, casting irregularities, traces of use, and minor surface corrosion.Weight: 341 g Dimensions: Diameter 22.5 cmThe present example is a chakram, a circular throwing weapon designed to be hurled with a spinning motion, allowing its sharpened outer edge to slice through a target. Traditionally employed in Asia, particularly in northern India, the chakram was both a weapon of war and a visible emblem of martial identity. Sikh warriors were known to wear chakrams both around their arms and mounted in graduated sizes upon the distinctive high, conical turban known as the dastar bunga, creating a striking and immediately recognizable martial silhouette.Originating in the Hindu tradition as one of the principal attributes of the god Vishnu, the chakram later became closely associated with Sikh martial culture. It was especially emblematic among the Akali warriors and, subsequently, the Khalsa order established in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru. Conceived as a community of saint-soldiers, the Khalsa upheld the ideal of defending the innocent and resisting religious oppression, and the chakram became both a practical weapon and a potent symbol of this ethos.Literature comparison:Compare a related chakram, in the National Army Museum, London, accession number NAM. 1960-08-213-2.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Bonhams London, 22 May 2025, lot 274Price: GBP 3,584 or approx.
