A DAYAZHAI YELLOW AND GRISAILLE 'PEONY' JARDINIèRE AND STAND, TIHEDIAN MARK, TONGZHI TO GUANGXU PERIODChina, 1862-1908. Of rectangular shape rising from four feet to an everted rim, supported on a rectangular flaring stand raised on four feet. The exterior of the jardiniere is decorated with leafy peonies in grisaille, extending to the sides of the stand, all against a bright yellow ground. The rims are decorated with a key-fret band. (2)The bases of the vessel and the stand both with an iron-red four-character seal mark Tihe Dian zhi.Provenance: From the collection of George C. T. Wan, New York, United States, and thence by descent in the family. George Chien-Tze 'C. T.' Wan was born in Jiangxi province, China, and developed an early fascination with Chinese porcelain while working in Shanghai as a representative for American importers of Chinese wares. His expertise and reputation in the field led to sponsorship for his immigration to the United States in 1949, and within a year he founded C. T. Wan & Co., a gallery specializing in Chinese art and antiques, in New York City. Over the following decades, the gallery became a respected destination for collectors, relocating successively to Fifth Avenue as Mr. Wan's business and collection grew. A dedicated dealer and connoisseur, Mr. Wan devoted his life to Asian art, and in his later years took quiet pride in reflecting on a career that left a meaningful legacy. Condition: Excellent condition with only minor wear and expected firing irregularities including dark spots, glaze pooling to the back, and soiling as well as traces of use to the interior.Weight: 3,128 g (total) Dimensions: Height 20.2 cm, Length 22.2 cmThe Hall of Manifest Harmony, Tihedian, was one of the six palaces in the northwestern sector of the Forbidden City, constructed on the site of the old rear hall of the Palace of Blessings to Mother Earth and the Gate of Gathering Excellence. The rooms on the east and west of the building are where the Empress Dowager Cixi spent most of her time while serving as regent to her son, the Tongzhi Emperor. Porcelains such as the present lot were specially commissioned by Cixi for her living spaces, and are based on her floral paintings representing the four seasons set against an imperial yellow background. Ronald W. Longsdorf, in 'Dayazhai Ware: Empress Dowager Porcelain', Orientations, March 1992, p. 56, writes that such porcelains were produced from the Tongzhi or early Guangxu periods under her supervision. Since only emperors were allowed to have an Imperial nianhao, or reign title, this hallmark served as her mark of reign. This is confirmed by the extent of imperial jade seals inscribed with the name 'Tihe Dian' dating to her reign (see image section for one example of such a seal).Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's London, 14 May 2019, lot 289 Price: GBP 15,000 or approx.
