拍品描述
Expert's note: The present Imperial porcelain dish is finely painted in bright yangcai famille rose enamels in the distinct Palace aesthetics of the period. The fondness for boldly defined roundels and the slightly opulent, even exuberant palette is characteristic of early Xianfeng court taste, continuing directly from Daoguang prototypes, yet rendered here with a freshness and assurance that argues strongly against a later Republican revival.A Xianfeng date is further supported by the slightly uneven yellow ground and the confident yet somewhat idiosyncratic rendering of the central fu character, which stands out from the more formulaic longevity medallions favored in the Guangxu revival style. While indebted to Daoguang decorative schemes, the present piece displays the heightened color intensity and courtly opulence associated with the opening years of the Xianfeng reign, before political turmoil curtailed regular kiln activity. Porcelain production at Jingdezhen during the Xianfeng reign was severely disrupted by the Taiping Rebellion, rendering imperial wares of the period exceedingly rare.China, 1851-1861. Finely potted with shallow rounded sides supported on a short foot, brightly enameled on a neatly incised yellow ground in shades of blue, green, pink, iron-red, violet, grisaille, black, and gilt with a central medallion enclosing a fu character within a shou character encircled by a ruyi-head border, surrounded by three roundels, each depicting a goat near a gnarled tree with rockwork, lingzhi, and flowers, alternating with antique treasures like a vase with blossoming peony and a bowl filled with pomegranates, all below a band of key-fret and gilt line-borders at the rim.The base with two green-enameled dragons centered by the iron-red six-character mark da Qing Xianfeng nianzhi and of the period.Provenance: From an old private collection in London, United Kingdom, and thence by descent. Condition: Excellent condition with only minor wear and firing irregularities.Weight: 448 g Dimensions: Diameter 23.5 cmThe ram is a symbol of filial piety, kindness, and patience. The three rams (sanyang) are also an auspicious motif, related both to the sun and to male children, as they provide a rebus for san yang kai tai, the opening up of the new growth in spring, which in turn symbolizes happiness and good fortune.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 24 September 2021, lot 820 Price: USD 93,750 or approx.
