China, 1279-1368. Heavily potted with rounded sides rising from a ring foot to an everted lipped rim, the central roundel is molded with a prancing qilin encircled by a wide ribbed band at the sides. The vessel is covered overall with an olive-tinged sea-green glaze pooling attractively in the recesses.Provenance: French trade. Acquired from a small estate sale in Doullens, France. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities including a glaze flaw at the rim, few small firing cracks, dark spots, glaze recesses, and pitting to the foot. The rim with a tiny nick and associated minuscule hairline.Weight: 2,079 g Dimensions: Diameter 30 cmThe qilin is one of the most auspicious mythical creatures seen in Chinese art and is said to live for a thousand years. It is considered to be the noblest of all animals, and a symbol of goodness. The qilin has a dragon-like head, horns, the body of a horse and the hooves of an ox, although exact representations differ throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties.
