拍品描述
Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 25 February 2026, based on sample number P126b78, sets the firing date of the one sample taken between 500 and 800 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.China, 13th-14th century. Heavily potted with a broad ovoid body rising to an angled shoulder and a short waisted neck with a lipped, everted rim. Richly carved with a wide band of lotus blossoms borne on leafy scrolling vines, framed by a tall petal band encircling the foot and thick swirling clouds on the shoulder. Covered overall in a fine sea-green glaze pooling and darkening in the recesses, the foot rim left unglazed to reveal the grayish-white ware, partially burnt to orange in the firing.Provenance: Collection of Ernst Arthur Voretzsch, acquired in 1902 in Lucknow, India, and thence by descent. A copy of an old collection card from Ernst Arthur Voretzsch with a short description and pencil drawing of the present lot, confirming the acquisition place and date stated above, accompanies this lot. Ernst Arthur Voretzsch (1868-1965) was a German diplomat and pioneering collector of East Asian art who served as consul in Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Shanghai, Wuhan, and Tokyo between 1906 and 1933. During these years he developed a sustained interest in the arts and history of East Asia, building an important collection and publishing studies such as Indian Art in Siam (1923), Altchinesische Bronzen (1924), and Die Geschichte Japans (1549-1578) (1926), alongside articles in scholarly journals and catalogues of Chinese painting in European and Japanese collections. Voretzsch maintained an active exchange with leading scholars and collectors, including Charles Lang Freer in the United States, Laurence Binyon of the British Museum, and Ryuichiro Hama of the Tokyo Imperial Household Museum. After retiring from the diplomatic service, he founded the Museum of Asian Art in Bamberg in 1937 and directed it until 1959, promoting the study and appreciation of Chinese, Japanese, and other Asian arts in Germany.Condition: Very good condition with expected wear and firing irregularities including kiln grit and a firing crack across the base extending approx. 6 cm on one side.
