拍品描述
A BAMBOO ROOT 'SCHOLAR' MOUNTAIN, SIGNED SHAOXI, QING DYNASTY, 18TH-19TH CENTURYChina. Dexterously carved in openwork in the form of a rugged escarpment, with a waterfall whose finely rendered waters descend between craggy cliffs. From these rocky outcrops rise gnarled pine trees, their needles meticulously detailed, alongside abundant grape clusters and other floral motifs. Beneath one of the trees, an elderly scholar with a long beard, clad in flowing robes, kneels in meditation, holding a fan in his right hand. Beside him stands an attendant, who carries a qin wrapped in a cloth bag.Inscriptions: The lower back is subtly incised with the signature 'Shaoxi'.Provenance: French trade. Acquired at a small estate sale in Blois, France.Condition: Very good condition with ancient wear, expected age cracks and splits, some possibly with old fills. Few minute nicks, light surface scratches. The wood with a rich, naturally grown, warm patina.Weight: 227.8 gDimensions: Height 13.7 cmThe present lot is carved in the shape of a miniature mountain. Placed on the scholar's desk, it invited the viewer to gaze upon the scene and imagine himself wandering among the peaks and valleys, stepping into the timeless world of the Immortals. Shaoxi was a distinguished master of bamboo carving of the Jiading School active during the Qing dynasty. He excelled in both high-relief and line-carving techniques, skillfully integrating the brushwork of landscape and figure painting into bamboo sculpture. For a carved bamboo brush pot with the signature Shaoxi, dated 19th century, see Ip Yee and L. Tam, Chinese Bamboo Carving (I), Hong Kong, 1978, p. 298-99, no. 82.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related bamboo root carving, dated 19th century, 19.7 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2015.500.6.1.
