拍品描述
Published: Myrna Myers (ed.) & Filippo Salviati (auth.), Radiant Stones. Archaic Chinese Jades, Paris, 2000, no. 85.China, 4th century BC. The surface is marked by regular intersecting lines creating a dense network of adjacent rhomboid patterns. The stone is of a light reddish-brown tone with dark brown veins and areas of calcification.Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear, small chips, natural fissures—some of which have developed into hairline cracks, soiling, weathering and erosion, and signs of prolonged burial.Weight: 293 g Dimensions: Diameter 14.2 cmIt is possible that this disc is unfinished. The way the decoration is carved illustrates one of the preliminary phases in making the regular pattern of small bosses, spirals or hexagons in relief often decorating these discs. The incision of parallel, intersecting lines created the grid to mark the position of the elements which were to appear in relief after abrasion of the areas between them.Discs in marble and steatite have been found in tombs of the Chu kingdom at Changsha, Hunan, in southern China, although the patterns usually incised on them are more advanced than in the present example.
