拍品描述
Published: Myrna Myers (ed.) & Filippo Salviati (auth.), Radiant Stones. Archaic Chinese Jades, Paris, 2000, no. 101.China, 4th century BC. The outer solid ring is carved with a variation of the spiral motifs seen in many discs of the period, while the inner area is decorated in openwork with six highly stylized figures of animals including two pairs of confronting dragons with theirs heads turned back toward a bird in a similar attitude placed between them. The translucent stone is of a celadon tone with patches of dark gray, cloudy inclusions, and areas of alteration and calcification.Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Excellent condition with minor old wear, faint traces of erosion, small nicks, and natural fissures, areas of alteration and calcification.Weight: 42.7 gDimensions: Diameter 8.3 cmIn the Zhou dynasty the number of jades in burial sites increased significantly, as multiple plaques and beads were sewn or strung together and draped over the face and body of the deceased. Jades in the forms of figures and animals became increasingly realistic, and surface patterns became more complex and highly decorative.Discs with openwork decoration form a minor but interesting category among jades made in the latter part of the Eastern Zhou period. The cutout decoration gives a sense of lightness to the disc, which was probably combined with other jades to form a pectoral. It can be seen as an intermediate stage between discs having their surfaces decorated with stylized dragon heads and discs in which dragons and phoenixes take on a much clearer shape and are more precisely carved.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related ornate jade disk in openwork with decoration of dragons and birds, Warring States period to Western Han dynasty, dated 4th-3rd century, 11.4 cm wide, in the Harvard Art Museum, object number 1943.50.547.
