拍品描述
DYNASTYChina, c. 3rd-1st century BC. Of circular form, divided into six segments, finely carved in openwork with an array of highly stylized dragons (chilong), their sinuous bodies rendered with minutely incised, rope-like striations and cross-hatched patterns, coiling around shield-shaped and oval elements arranged above and below the disc, the composition framed on both the inner and outer edges by plain rims. The translucent stone of an attractive icy white tone with areas of opaque calcification.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, with ancient wear and inherent natural imperfections. Distinct traces of weathering and erosion. Scattered minor chips and nibbling along the edges. Occasional small nicks and shallow surface scratches. The stone surface with small areas of soil encrustation, remnants of red ritual pigment, and signs of calcification.Weight: 283.2 g (total)Dimensions: Diameter 19.7 cmWith an associated padded silk storage box. (7)Discs with openwork decoration form a minor but interesting category among jades made in the latter part of the Eastern Zhou and early Western Han period. The cutout decoration gives a sense of lightness to the disc, which was probably combined with other jades to form a pectoral. It can be seen as an intermediate stage between discs having their surfaces decorated with stylized dragon heads and discs in which dragons and phoenixes take on a much clearer shape and are more precisely carved.Literature comparison:Compare a related jade reticulated 'dragon and phoenix' disc (bi), early Warring States period, in the Aurora Museum, Shanghai, China. Compare a related jade disc (bi) with openwork decoration of dragons and phoenixes, Han dynasty, 2nd-1st century BC, 11.6 cm long, illustrated in Filippo Salviatti, 4000 Years of Chinese Archaic Jades, 2017, p. 343, no. 342.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 26 November 2024, lot 2024Estimate: HKD 1,000,000 or approx. EUR 111,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: A large, reticulated pale celadon jade disc (bi), Eastern Han dynastyExpert remark: Compare the related form, manner of carving, and 'chilong' decoration in openwork. Note the similar size (18.5 cm).
