拍品描述
Published: Myrna Myers (ed.) & Filippo Salviati (auth.), Radiant Stones. Archaic Chinese Jades, Paris, 2000, no. 117.China, 3rd-1st century BC. This set comprises four closely related thin, slit, disc-shaped earrings of graduated size, each pierced with a large eccentric aperture and two small perforations at the extremities for suspension. The cream-toned jade is marked by natural inclusions in dark brown, olive green, and russet. (4)Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, old smoothened chips, some nibbling, weathering, and signs of prolonged burial. One old repair to the second largest ornament.Weight: 3.9 cm - 1.9 cm Dimensions: Length 5.7- 3.7 cmThe shape recalls that of the jue slit rings, but here the central opening is much larger and off-center, giving the bodies of the objects varying width. This type of ornament is occasionally documented in finds of the Neolithic period, but it is only from the Warring States period that it appears more regularly in archaeological records. Its diffusion is limited to south-east China and to Yunnan province in particular, attesting to a local preference for a shape which did not enter the main repertory of Chinese forms. The small holes suggest that these ornaments were strung together in a vertical row, arranged according to their diminishing size. Two such sets, each formed by fourteen rings, have been discovered in tomb M12:15 of the Shizhaishan cemetery of the Dian culture: they are believed to have been worn as long pendants hung from the ears. That these ornaments were used by the Dian people is documented in some bronze figurines belonging to this southern culture showing also that the slit in the ring was used to secure the ornament to the earlobes. Literature comparison:Compare a closely related group of jade earrings, Warring States Period to Western Han Dynasty, 5.6 -1.2 cm wide, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 購玉000737N000000000.
