拍品描述
China, circa 17th-18th century. Both tazzas are well-potted, with shallow, rounded sides, rising from a conical foot, with a straight, projecting rim. The surface entirely covered in an uneven greenish-brown glaze, which pools attractively, stopping around the foot rim to reveal the underlying buff-colored ceramic. (2)The recessed base stamped with a four-character mark within a square frame reading Tongcheng zhangshi 桐城張氏 [Zhang Family of Tongcheng City]. Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Very good condition with some old wear and firing-inherent irregularities, including small areas of glaze recess and fine, intentional glaze crackling. Five distinct spur marks on the interior of each dish. Minor nibbling and small chips around the rims. Weight: 714.3 gDimensions: Height 4.4 cm, Diameter 15.8 cm (each)The Zhang family of Tongcheng, in Anhui Province, established itself as a distinguished lineage of scholars and officials from the Ming through the Qing dynasties. Their prominence rested on producing multiple generations of 'juren' and 'jinshi', successful candidates of the imperial examinations, including Zhang Boxing (1732-1801), a renowned historian and advocate of practical Confucianism. The Zhangs were central figures in the Tongcheng School, which promoted a literary style characterized by clarity, restraint, and moral purpose, profoundly influencing official prose and classical education in China until the late nineteenth century.Tongcheng was not only a literary and administrative hub but also located in a region with a long-standing tradition of craftsmanship, particularly in southern Chinese porcelain and fine ceramics. Scholarly families such as the Zhangs frequently collected ceramics as symbols of cultural refinement, both for everyday use and to adorn their academies and libraries. Their austere and restrained approach to architecture and furnishings, reflecting Confucian values, was complemented by carefully selected ceramic pieces adhering to the same principles, of which the present stoneware examples are a notable illustration.
