拍品描述
China, 1662-1722. Each heavily potted, rectangular in form with tapering sides, supported on four short, L-shaped legs. The exterior boldly decorated in bright yellow and green glaze, to depict on the front a pair of confronting Buddhist lions in a crouching pose, their heads turned outward, with paws, manes, and faces alternately colored. The glaze stopping just above the underside, revealing the buff-colored ceramic beneath. (2)Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Fair condition with expected wear and firing-inherent irregularities, including light pitting and minor crazing. Some areas of glaze loss with associated touchups and repainting. Scattered chips to edges and other exposed areas. Sparse nicks and shallow surface scratches. Weight: 1,925 g (total)Dimensions: Length 18.4 to 18.7 cmVividly colored with lead glazes fired at relatively low temperatures, this vessel exemplifies advances in ceramic technology originating in the Ming dynasty, which continued to be applied and refined throughout the Qing dynasty. The brilliant new palette found expression not only in palace and temple construction but also in sculptures and ceremonial vessels. The yellow hue held profound significance during the Qing dynasty, symbolizing supreme imperial authority. Known as the 'Yellow heaven' color, it represented the mandate of Heaven and was reserved exclusively for the imperial family, underscoring their elevated status and distinguishing them from the broader populace.Literature comparison:Compare a pair of related green, yellow, and aubergine-glazed wall vases in the form of Buddhist lions, Qing dynasty, Kangxi period, 1662-1722, 18 cm high each, sold at Christie's Paris, 14 December 2003, lot 608. Compare a related yellow and green pottery 'dragon and lotus' tripod incense burner, Ming dynasty, late 16th century, sold at Bonhams London, 6 November 2025, lot 452.
