Its name derives from the Dutch term 'kraak', which refers to the Portuguese ship type 'caracca', employed to transport goods from the Far East to Europe. From 1602 onward, the export and distribution of Chinese porcelain were conducted not by the Portuguese but by the Dutch East India Company. In 17th-century Holland, deep bowls or dishes with a flat rim were termed 'klapmutsen', as when inverted they evoked the form of a cap or hat with a brim. This typology, derived from the Chinese deep bowl, was particularly favored in the Netherlands, where it accommodated European culinary conventions for soups and stews. See Eva Str?ber, La maladie de porcelaine… Ostasiatisches Porzellan aus der Sammlung Augusts des Starken, 2001, p. 22.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Bonhams London, 31 October 2025, lot 530Price: GBP 3,328 or approx.
