拍品描述
China, circa 16th-18th century. Each finely and symmetrically cast, the stylized mythical animals depicted striding with outstretched legs, their elongated bodies carefully incised with circular fur motifs, extending into flame-like tails raised aloft and powerful heads, slightly elevated and turned as if looking back, bearing a fierce expression, one with mouth agape, the other with jaws closed. (2)Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Good condition with surface wear and casting-inherent irregularities. Occasional minor nicks, light surface scratches, and minute dents and losses here and there. The bronze surface with a dark, naturally developed patina, mostly to the underside of the figures. Weight: 135.1 g (total)Dimensions: Length 4.7 to 4.9 cmSmall weights of this type originate from bronze mat weights made in the Western Han dynasty, although their popularity increased in the Tang period when bronze and jade versions were made in relatively large numbers. Small animal sculptures such as the present example were made from the early Ming dynasty, due to a renewed interest in bronze wares for the scholar's desk during the Xuande reign. Examples from this period, however, are very rare, and no other paperweight of this form and design appears to have been published.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's New York, 18 March 2014, lot 254 Price: USD 16,250 or approx.
