Description

In the centre, a middle-aged man with a thick moustache, wearing European-style clothing with a black tie and a Parsi cap on his head, rides a dappled horse. On the belly of the horse is a Nastaliq inscription “Nawab Dji Sang” (?). A small white bulldog or pug runs in front of the horse, while a Sikh servant, dressed in white and holding a fan, walks behind. In the background, a distant landscape with ramparts and a cityscape stretches along the horizon. Narrow orange, black, and blue borders with white and black rules. Framed under passepartout and glazed. An unusual painting in which both Mughal and Rajasthani styles are clearly recognisable, yet it carries the influence of a new era, shaped by the growing presence of the East India Company in the region. Its style recalls the works produced for English patrons, blending traditional techniques with emerging tastes of the colonial period.
